2. The piece is thoroughly hand-quilted, section by section. (click to enlarge)

3. Twelve intricately pieced tree blocks are crisply arranged on the diagonal. (click to enlarge)

5. The trees are exquisitely detailed and composed of dozens of carefully arranged tiny triangles in pink, green and white. (click to enlarge)

6. The trunk is a neat pieced version with pink and green alternating for a look like a festively ribbon-wound trunk. (click to enlarge)

7. The wide, deep base balances the crown of the tree out nicely with a row of pink sandwiched between two rows of green. (click to enlarge)

8. Up the center of the airy crown runs a sort of solid branch with pink filling in around green. (click to enlarge)

9. Between the blocks run double-line shallow curves of quilting. (click to enlarge)

10. The quilt is constructed really unusually with an abundance of difficult mitered seams between blocks. Sometimes these complex diagonal seams leave tiny notch openings that reveal the golden yellow backing, as here. (click to enlarge)

11. The slightest bunching of the batting is visible because it allows the yellow backing to show through. (click to enlarge)

12. Under the arms of the tree, within inset outlines: little plump bow ties. (click to enlarge)

13. The border triangles are inset-outlined by the piece along their diagonals. And the narrow channel of white between border and blocks is quilted in with separated shallow S curves. (click to enlarge)

14. The quilt is backed in a vibrant solid yellow. (click to enlarge)

15. The neatly machine-stitched self binding is rolled from the back. (click to enlarge)

16. A tiny rust spot. (click to enlarge)

17. A few small areas of fabric thinning and splitting can be found near the top edge. (click to enlarge)

ere, in classic 1930's solids, is a delightful riff on the complex Tree of Life. This impressive version includes a continuing trunk with little on-point diamonds and the base of the trunk pieced of triangles as if it were festively ribbon-wound. The diagonally listing trees balance on large wedges of more pieced triangles beneath their bases. And each full crown is a huge mass of sparkling green and pink triangles, all hand-pieced and little more than an inch wide. The piece is beautifully set off with a grand sawtooth sort of pieced border treatment and the sashing construction is notable too, with lots of challenging mitered seams. A delightful and unusual find!

Size
The quilt measures about 63 x 79 inches. The half-square triangles are right around 1 inch square or a little over.

Quilting
The hand-quilting is excellent, with 7-8 little stitches to the inch, counting on the top side of the quilt only. Many of the details are inset outlined by the piece and the rows of triangles are quilted toget in long lines.

Construction
The complex pattern is hand-pieced.

Backing, Binding & Batting
The backing is a vibrant solid yellow in strong shape.

The straight-grain machine-applied binding is unusual with make-it-work tucks to ease aroung the angled corners and a width that veers between just over 1/4-inch all the way up more like 1-inch most of the way around. It shows edge wear along the top and bottom edges.

The batting is thin and relatively even with just some minor thinned spots.

Condition
The quilt's condition is strong, supple and clean. I just note some areas of minor thinning and splitting in the white near the top edges. I also note a couple tiny round surface spots.
